Please tell us a bit about yourself.
We are two people, a sculptor and a new media artist, based out of Spokane, Washington. The GlitterCouch project is a community based platform where we invite local artists to join us on our glitzy seat and talk about their work in depth. We believe that by giving a comfortable space, artists can talk openly about their work and through our social media platforms, we provide an audience that they might not normally have access to. We believe this is beneficial to building a better local arts scene.
When you create, what inspires you?
Seeing other artists being active in the community and making fantastic work is the best way to get inspired. Spokane has a lot of great artists, but it can be easy to get tunnel vision when producing your own work. It’s because of the local arts community that we were inspired to create this platform to learn from them, while at the same time exposing art to all kinds of people.
fēlan is old english for feel. What makes you feel attraction?
Humans have always been drawn to shiny objects, which is the main reason we decided to make such an obtrusively shimmery piece. When the actual GlitterCouch is in a public space, it tends to garner a lot of attention, and some people can’t help but gravitate towards it. And that’s what kind of object GlitterCouch is meant to be. Like a landmark of the arts, but on the internet and social media.
What is your medium of choice? Why?
We capture GlitterCouch through photography, however it is the background location that reels us in. We take GlitterCouch into a variety of sceneries in order to play up the juxtaposition of this shiny piece of furniture that is placed out in the woods, or in a parking garage. We even take GlitterCouch to iconic locations in our town of Spokane, Washington. That way the familiarity of the place is now merged in the image with our couch.
Please feel free to add anything else you think is relevant.
