Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a freshman in college, I love writing and drawing, and I’m trying to start that career of doing what I love now.
When you create, what inspires you?
Music is a huge factor, when I hear a great song I try to put a story behind it in my head, this is so problematic when I drive though! Besides the point, hearing a song lets me piece together either an idea for a short story or film I want to make, or it helps me create a scene for characters I already have in my head.
Tell us about the specific inspiration behind one or each of your accepted pieces.
For the piece I submitted I was in humanities class and I just started to writing in tune with a creepy song I knew, and eventually the poem was on paper.
What is your medium of choice? Why?
I normally just have a pen and any kind of paper, that doesn’t really matter, now if I have a notebook that I normally write in I’ll use that for sure, but if I don’t it won’t crush me to not have it.
How did you first discover your love for writing?
Really early on, I remember I tried to write my first book in fourth grade, and drew snakes since kindergarten. The passion has always been there, but it has taken me a while to realize that this is what I really want to do with my life.
What advice would you give to an aspiring poet/visual artist?
You do not have to be an expert at everything, your first draft is going to be lacking, everyone’s is, your first sketch will have flaws, but you can build on that and realize your mistakes to create something even better.
If you weren’t writing/about fear, what would be your topic of choice?
That’s hard, I’m not sure, maybe emotional pain since most poems seem to come from the latter.
