Interview – MiYoung Margolis

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a mixed-media artist, a wearable art fashion designer, model and dance performer living in Seattle Washington.
When you create, what inspires you?
Most of my work focused around female emotions. I want to take the viewer on the emotional journey experienced by all women.

Tell us about the specific inspiration behind one or each of your accepted pieces.

The pieces featured here are all from my “Jane Collection”. Inspired by the concept of Jane Eyre and the experience of women in the Victorian era. “Jane Collection” is a modern expression of the emotions that I and all women experience.

In these works, A female form is shown as she reaches the breaking point, an emotional and physical exhaustion. Some relate to these works through the loss of a relationship, others the challenges of a busy non-stop life. While every viewer will experience these painting as a reflection of their own personal journey, the emotions depicted are shared amongst all and acknowledging them has the power to bring us all closer together.

What is your medium of choice? Why?

I like to play with texture, I like to explore mixing materials to create a sculpture on canvas. Oil, Acrylic, Gels, Sand, Salt, Crystal, Cardboard and Rice Paper. All of these textures combine with rich color to tell a story, to convey emotion.

How did you first discover your love for creating?

I have always been an artist. I started when I was in elementary school and since then, my mediums of expression have spanned canvas, dance, poetry and most recently wearable art.

fēlan is old English for feel. What makes you feel attraction?

Challenge… Nothing in life worth having comes easy… Nothing that comes easy is worth having…

Please feel free to add anything else you think is relevant.
